General Manager and non-voting SCF Board of Directors.
Michael Watson has an extensive background in law, real estate, economic development and First Nations business development. Prior to coming to British Columbia in 1998, Mr. Watson was involved in economic development in Nova Scotia, working with both the Province and the City of Halifax, as the Director of Marketing for the City and in many other economic development and business initiatives. Much of Mr. Watson’s work was involved in initiating, structuring, managing and overseeing the development of major real estate projects and business parks through the Province.
Mr. Watson was brought to Chilliwack in 1998 to set up Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation, and served as its first CEO. CEPCO has achieved a well-deserved reputation as a very aggressive local community economic development organization, respected throughout British Columbia.
In 2001, Mr. Watson joined Stó:lō Community Futures and Stó:lō Development Corporation, two Aboriginal economic development organizations, as the General Manager of both operations. Stó:lō Community Futures, which receives its mandate from the Federal Government through Western Economic Diversification, is actively involved in lending funds to new and existing Aboriginal entrepreneurs, developing training programs for Aboriginal businesses, structuring First Nations business and providing economic services to Aboriginal Communities throughout the Stó:lō Traditional Territory. Stó:lō Development Corporation, was the original business and economic development arm for the Stó:lō Nation that was started nearly 25 years ago. In 2012 a new Stó:lō Company, Four Corners Tribal Business Corporation, bought Stó:lō Development Corporation, and is now working with several First Nation communities across Canada; the private sector; and, actively seeking investment opportunities for its Stó:lō owners. Four Corners is owned by four Stó:lō Communities, including Shxwhà:y Village, Skowkale, Tzeachten and Yakweakwioose First Nations. Four Corners currently provided management services for Seven Generations Environmental Services Ltd., an Aboriginal owned environmental firm, owned by six Stó:lō Communities – Aitchelitz, Leq’á:mél, Skawahlook, Skowkale, Tzeachten and Yakweakwioose First Nations. Both organizations are directed by their own independent Board of Directors, and have a very qualified Staff contingent that oversees the business operations of both organizations.
Mr. Watson has been a guest speaker at several conferences on the strategies to create viable Aboriginal businesses and successfully developed First Nation reserve lands. He was recently nominated by the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award, for the prestigious Legacy Award, which is awarded to any Chilliwack business person who has taken an active role in making Chilliwack a better place, and stands out amongst peers as a good corporate citizen.
Stó:lō Community Futures, under the leadership of Mr. Watson, recently launch the STÓ:LŌ MEANS BUSINESS initiative, which announced several new Aboriginal business partnerships, including new lending programs and business training for Aboriginal entrepreneurs.
