Michael Watson has an extensive background in law, real estate, economic development and First Nations business development. Prior to coming to British Columbia in 1998, Mr. Watson was involved in economic development in Nova Scotia, working with both the Province and the City of Halifax, as the Director of Marketing for the City and in many other economic development and business initiatives. Mr. Watson was brought to Chilliwack in 1998 to set up Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation, and served as its first CEO. CEPCO has achieved a well-deserved reputation as a very aggressive local community economic development organization, respected throughout British Columbia.
In 2001, Mr. Watson joined Stó:lō Community Futures (SCF) and Stó:lō Development Corporation (now IndigeNATION Strategic Advisors), two Aboriginal economic development organizations, as the General Manager of both operations. SCF is actively involved in lending funds to new and existing Aboriginal entrepreneurs, developing training programs for Aboriginal businesses, structuring First Nations business and providing economic services to Aboriginal Communities throughout the large Stó:lō Traditional Territory.
SCF has been recognized as having developed a transformative business and economic strategy – Stó:lō MEANS BUSINESS, which is focused upon developing a major Indigenous business centre in BC. With 24 First Nation communities, an Indigenous population over 15,000 and now with over 250 Aboriginal businesses, Sólh Téméxw is an emerging Aboriginal business powerhouse in BC. Deploying unique business growth concepts, such as Aboriginal branding strategies, cluster theory, selective attraction strategies and land development focuses; a major Aboriginal business economy is being developed in Stó:lō. Strategic business partnerships have been credited by SCF with leading commercial leaders, educational institutions, governments and private sector partners, that support Aboriginal business. SCF’s unique and innovative strategies have gained a regional and national focus, and have won awards for Innovation and Excellence in Aboriginal business development.
Mr. Watson has been a guest speaker at several conferences on the unique and transformative approaches to create viable and ongoing Aboriginal businesses and successfully developed First Nation economies.
