The dream for any fashion designer, is to showcase your work on the four main runways of the fashion world – Paris, New York, London and Milan. For one local Indigenous designer, she’s already halfway there.
Linda Kay Peters, and her fashion labels Ringing Bell Robes and Lyn Kay Designs, incorporate Cree, Ojibway and Coast Salish influences, into her line of coats, jackets, vest, formal wear, dance regalia and other attire. Beginning her business was not a conscience decision – it evolved from Linda’s love of sewing, and with the help of a co-worker mentor. Linda started doing fashion shows in 1998, but did not develop her formal business plan, until she accessed Stó:lō Community Futures programs when she was given the opportunity to participate in international fashion shows, such as New York’s Fashion Week in 2013. Since that time, she has done fashion shows all over Canada, and in March 2019, had the opportunity to showcase her fashions under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
Although certainly glamourous, running a fashion house is a tremendous amount of work. One of struggles that Linda faces, is building a level of inventory of her pieces, and faces the business decision of outsourcing the sewing, that matches the same skill level as her own. There is also the other issue of protecting her work and original designs. Linda has always acknowledged the work of artists that she has incorporated into her pieces, including Al Bowering, Gabriel George, George Pennier, Fred Price, and Irene Olsen. As a business owner and designer, Linda has thought of innovative and creative ways to keep the high quality of her work, authentically Canadian, and exclusive high-end designs.
Stó:lō Community Futures is pleased to support Linda as she expands her fashions into the global market.
