Aboriginal B.E.S.T. Program- Oct 22, 2018 - Nov 2, 2018

Stó:lō Community Futures is offering a FREE Aboriginal Business and Entrepreneurship Skills Training program (BEST) from October 22, 2018 - November 2, 2018 (Monday-Friday). Aboriginal BEST workshop sessions are designed to help participants identify viable business ideas and determine their feasibility. Participants will conduct market research, write a business plan, and explore financing options.

The program is open to all self-identified First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people in the Stó:lō Territory.

Stó:lō Community Futures, in partnership with the SBA, and with generous funding from the BC Rural Dividend Fund, has created an opportunity for Activ8 Education Training, offering, Social Media Level 1.

This was a 10-hour, 2-day session, where participants learned: how to build their social media strategy ,they gained understanding of the various social channels and they learned proper posting etiquette and engagement strategies.

​Marketing Level 1 - September 23rd and 24th, 2017

​SCF, in partnership with the Stó:lō Business Association and with funding from the BC Rural Dividend Fund, offered Marketing Level 1, a course where Indigenous entrepreneurs and business owners leaned to understand, how to reach, and how to engage the target customer.  This was a 10-hour, 2-day workshop, where participants learned core customer-facing approaches and how to use communication best practices in a way that encourages sales and long-term customer loyalty.

Aboriginal BEST Training - November 28, 2016

With generous sponsorship from Vancity, Stó:lō Community Futures (SCF) offered the Aboriginal BEST program, a comprehensive suite of business-related topics, including building a business plan, financing and tax issues, target market strategies, and developing business operations, to 24 Indigenous participants.  The BEST program, usually held over two weeks, was condensed into an accelerated program, from November 28th to December 2nd, 2016, in the SCF Boardroom, to existing and aspiring Indigenous entrepreneurs.

The Aboriginal BEST Program benefits people in all stages of business development, who want to turn their dreams into reality. The classes focused on nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit of people, communities, and organizations. Participants meet guest speakers, identify viable business ideas, determine business feasibility, and take steps to start or grow their own businesses.  Facilitators Flavio Caron and  Kristin Kozuback, worked with the students to develop effective “elevator pitches”, a concise and effective communication tool to promote the unique aspects of their business.
 
Aboriginal BEST is for Aboriginal, Métis, and Inuit, status or not, who are interested in becoming self-employed or starting their own business. BEST benefits people in all stages of business development who want to turn their dreams into reality. Some people are looking for a part-time business opportunity, others have a solid idea to research, and some are eager to write a plan that will help them launch or grow their venture.

​Many Aboriginal BEST graduates have gone on to build successful business, and we certainly wish our 2016 participants the same success!   We are sure there will be many successful businesses from this class.  Our hands are held high to Vancity for their continued support of SCF and the Indigenous entrepreneurs of S’ólh Téméxw.

ABSN Regional Entrepreneurial Workshop - November 14th, 2015

Stó:lō Community Futures​, in joint partnership with the Aboriginal Business Services Network, is hosting a FREE Entrepreneurial Workshop, on Monday, November 16th, 2015!  The session will run from 4PM to 8PM, in the Kwantlen First Nation Boardroom.  Flavio Caron and Kristin Kozuback, trainers for Aboriginal BEST, will be presenting information on various topics, including: What is an Entrepreneur? Goals for your Business , What Types of Businesses are Needed in Your Area? and What Goes into a Business Plan? Teresa Ryder from Aboriginal Tourism BC (AtBC), will be making a presentation that will focus on AtBC’s 12 Training and Development Programs, aimed at exploring cultural tourism in your Community, building on existing tourism experience to bring to market and targeting training and capacity needs at a Community Level.

Learn to conduct market research, write business plans, and explore financing options on your journey to self-employment success!

Aboriginal BEST is for Aboriginal, Métis, and Inuit, status or not, who are interested in becoming self-employed or starting their own business. BEST benefits people in all stages of business development who want to turn their dreams into reality. Some people are looking for a part-time business opportunity, others have a solid idea to research, and some are eager to write a plan that will help them launch or grow their venture.

Over 2,000 people in 100 BC communities have taken part in Aboriginal BEST in the past 10 years. 


ABSN Regional Entrepreneurial Workshop - February 24th, 2015

Stó:lō Community Futures, with the Aboriginal Business Service Network (ABSN) hosted the ABSN Regional Entrepreneurial Workshop on February 2th, 2015, at the Stó:lō Resource Centre (Building 10 - 7201 Vedder Road, Chilliwack, BC). 

John Johnstone from Public Works and Government Services Canada presented information on how to sell goods and services to the Government of Canada, the Procurement Strategy for Aboriginal Businesses (PSAB), and how to navigate government processes.

Dr. Mike Ivanof from the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), presented information on the fundamentals of a business plan, key financial documents for your business and the key components of a marketing plan.

This all-day session, which includes a light breakfast, lunch and snacks, was FREE to attend, and well attended by both existing entrepreneurs, and those considering starting a business.



Aboriginal BEST Training Program - November 2014

Stó:lō Community Futures hosted a FREE Aboriginal BEST training program in November 2014.  Sponsored and funded by the BC Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, with additional funding from the Canada-BC Labour Market Agreement, and support and funding from Vancity Credit Union, the Aboriginal BEST program provides job creation & skills training.  Aboriginal BEST is a free training series that helps to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of people, communities, and organizations. Participants meet guest speakers, identify viable business ideas, determine their feasibility, and take steps to start or grow their own businesses. Learn to conduct market research, write business plans, and explore financing options on your journey to self-employment success!

Each One, Grow One - October to December, 2013

Rocio Zielinski, SCF Operations and Loans Manager, along with Nina Kendall, Account Manager at VanCity and a Sts’ailes Member, co-facilitated the very successful “Each One, Grow One” training session modules over a seven week period in Fall, 2013, in the SCF Boardroom.  Aboriginal entrepreneurs from as far as Yale First Nation attended the sessions, driving an hour in each direction.  The Program was well received and a success for both VanCity and SCF.  T

Topics included developing cash flow projections, keys to market research, developing a marketing plan, where to look for capital, as well as understanding credit ratings, understanding what it takes to be an entrepreneur, and items to look for in a business plan.
